Use Jumper Cables the Right Way

Jumper cables are used to connect two car batteries together. The cables are red and black, with a clamp on either end of each cable. The red cable connects to the red terminals on both batteries and the black cable does the same. You start by connecting cables to the good battery with the car turned off.

Avoid touching the clamps together while you attach the clamps to the dead battery. With cables in place, turn on the good car. Allow the car to run for a couple of minutes as the dead battery is just charging up. There should be enough power for the vehicle to start on its own after a few minutes.

Turn on the car with the dead battery and remove the jumper cables. Take the car for a 20-minute ride so that the battery charges up. If the car doesn't start, you may need to call for help.
